CONTINUING LEARNING
The Continuing Learning Committee of APPWA creates professional learning opportunities for APPWA members and for the wider community interested in psychoanalytic psychotherapy.
APPWA members participate in regular in-house clinical seminars, case presentations, workshops, lectures, and consultancies as part of their professional development.
Additionally, the Continuing Learning Committee has a mandate to provide professional learning opportunities for interested members of the professional public. Public lectures and supervision opportunities by visiting experts are also offered – see the APPWA calendar.

APPWA COURSES
In addition to the APPWA Training Programme in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, APPWA offers a number of other training opportunities for appropriately qualified professionals in the area of counselling and psychotherapy.
Infant observation entails observing an infant in his/her family from birth for a period of 12 to 18 months. It has become an important strand of training for psychoanalytically oriented therapists, as well as for other people who work with children. Its value lies in the way in which it enhances observational skills, opens the observer to an experience of the profound emotions that surround the first year of life, and encourages a reflective position in relation to the material being observed. All these are necessary for the practice of psychoanalytic psychotherapy. Infant observation provides a valuable first step in training. It is also a rich and valuable experience in its own right for people working in helping professions.
The programme is undertaken in weekly seminars, in small groups, with a consultant, over a period of about 12 to 18 months. It is recommended as a prerequisite to the APPWA training programme.

Introductory Course in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy
Recent years have seen a significant growth in interest in the psychoanalytic approach to counselling and psychotherapy. In response, APPWA is offering an Introductory Course in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy for practitioners wishing to learn more about this approach — either to augment their existing knowledge and practice skills, or as a preliminary to undertaking full professional training in psychoanalytic psychotherapy. This introductory course will be a useful preliminary step for those interested in undertaking the full training programme.
Spread over 8 weeks, each weekly session involves a one-hour theoretical seminar followed by a 90 minute small group session. In the small group session, participants will have the opportunity to explore the practical application of ideas presented in the seminar, and to discuss the application of psychoanalytic concepts in their own clinical work. The maximum number of places in the course is 20, but with no more than 10 in each small group.
In 2010 the Introductory Course in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy will run on Thursday mornings, 9.30am – 12.30pm, August 5th to September 23rd.
Brochure and application from can be downloaded here.
